Why iTey Store stopped selling virtual dollar cards

We sold Virtual Visa and Virtual Mastercard prepaid cards until July 2026. They worked — but too many customers got stuck between buying the card and using it: identity checks on the issuer's side, cards that couldn't be refunded when those checks failed, and a redemption flow that needed more hand-holding than a gift card should. We took them off the shelf rather than keep selling something that frustrated people.

What a virtual dollar card is, and who still needs one

It's a prepaid Visa or Mastercard that exists only as a number, expiry and CVV, funded in shillings and spent in dollars. You need one when the thing you want to pay for takes only a card — no gift card, no M-Pesa — and your Kenyan card is refused.

The point of this page: most things people buy a virtual card for have a simpler answer.

Check first: is there a gift card for it?

If it really has to be a card

Facebook and Google Ads, Shopify, a SaaS tool with no gift card, a crypto exchange deposit — then you do need a virtual dollar card, and you'll get it from a service that issues them to Kenyan customers. Figo is the best known; there are others. What to expect:

Identity verification before the card is issued — an ID photo, sometimes a selfie.
A funding step — you load a wallet in KES, then create the card from it.
Fees — a card-creation fee and a foreign-exchange margin on every load. Read them before you fund.
Declines still happen — some merchants block all prepaid cards. Ads platforms are the usual culprits.

Can I use it on Amazon Kenya (amazon.co.ke)?

Amazon.co.ke accepts Kenyan cards and M-Pesa directly, so you don't need one. For amazon.com or the European sites, an Amazon gift card for that country is simpler than a card.

Does M-Pesa GlobalPay replace a virtual dollar card?

For some sites, yes — it's Safaricom's own virtual Visa linked to your M-Pesa. It faces the same prepaid-card declines on strict merchants, but it's worth trying first because there's nothing to sign up for.

Will iTey Store sell virtual cards again?

Only if we find an issuer whose cards are delivered and redeemed as cleanly as a gift card. When that happens this page will say so.
