How to Pay for ChatGPT Plus in Kenya (Without a US Credit Card)
If you've tried to upgrade to ChatGPT Plus from Kenya, you've probably seen this:
"Your card was declined."
It's not your card and it's not your bank. It's how OpenAI's payment processor treats cards issued in Kenya — and it catches most M-Pesa-linked virtual cards, most Equity Visa cards, and a good share of NCBA, KCB and Co-op cards too.
This guide explains why the decline happens, the options that actually work from Kenya, and the one we now sell at iTey Store: a ChatGPT Payment Card you buy with M-Pesa and redeem in about five minutes. Updated September 2026.
Why your Kenyan card fails on ChatGPT
OpenAI bills through Stripe. Stripe runs every card through anti-fraud checks, and one of them looks at the BIN — the first digits that identify the issuing bank. Kenyan BINs score badly, especially when:
- the card is virtual or prepaid (most M-Pesa-linked cards are),
- the billing country on the form doesn't match the card's country, or
- the card has never been used internationally before.
You can have a perfectly good Visa with KSh 50,000 on it and still be declined the instant Stripe reads the BIN. Nothing on your side is broken. The gate is upstream.
First, check which plan you actually need
Since October 2025, OpenAI has sold a cheaper plan in Kenya called ChatGPT Go at $5 a month — roughly KSh 650. It gives you the current model, more messages than the free tier, file uploads and image generation, with lower limits than Plus. For most people who "just want ChatGPT to stop cutting me off", Go is enough.
ChatGPT Plus is $20 a month (about KSh 2,600 at OpenAI's own Kenyan billing) and adds the higher limits, the advanced models and the newest features first. ChatGPT Pro is $200 a month and is for people running it all day.
The card below pays for any of them.
Your real options from Kenya
Option 1: Borrow a foreign card
Some people subscribe on a relative's US or UK card. It works until it doesn't — when the card expires or they revoke it, your AI tools vanish mid-task. A bad foundation for something you depend on.
Option 2: A virtual dollar card service
Services such as Figo, Wise or Revolut issue a USD card you can fund in shillings. Per month this is the cheapest route, and if you already have one of these accounts, use it. The catch is everything before the first payment: sign-up, identity verification, funding a wallet, and in Revolut's case not being officially available in Kenya at all. We sold virtual cards ourselves until 2026 and stopped because customers kept getting stuck at that stage.
Option 3: The ChatGPT Payment Card (what we sell now)
This is a prepaid card built for one purpose. It is issued by Rewarble, a company that makes brand-specific prepaid cards. You buy a code from iTey Store with M-Pesa, redeem it on Rewarble's site, and receive a card number, expiry date and CVV. You put those into ChatGPT's subscription page and you're in. No bank, no wallet to fund, no international card.
We sell two sizes:
| Card | Price at iTey Store | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT Payment Card $30 | KSh 5,999 | One month of Plus with $10 spare — or six months of ChatGPT Go |
| ChatGPT Payment Card $60 | KSh 10,999 | Three months of Plus — or a year of ChatGPT Go |
Prices exclude VAT. The code is emailed to you as soon as your M-Pesa payment confirms.
Step-by-step: ChatGPT Plus with the Payment Card
- Buy the card. Go to the $30 card or the $60 card, pay with M-Pesa, and accept the terms. The 16-digit code lands in your email within a minute.
- Redeem it at Rewarble. Open rewarble.com/redeem, enter the 16-digit code, and Rewarble issues your Reward Card — a card number, expiry date and CVV. Redeem only at rewarble.com; Rewarble does not refund codes entered anywhere else.
- Subscribe. In ChatGPT, open Settings → Subscription (or click Upgrade), choose Go, Plus or Pro, and enter the Reward Card details. If a billing address is asked for, enter your own.
- You're in. The subscription activates immediately. OpenAI bills the card each month until its balance runs out, so a $60 card renews Plus three times without you touching it.
What it actually costs
Plain numbers, so you can decide:
- ChatGPT Plus, billed directly by OpenAI: $20 a month, about KSh 2,600 — if your card is accepted.
- The $30 Payment Card: KSh 5,999 — one month of Plus plus $10 of balance that carries over.
- The $60 Payment Card: KSh 10,999 — three months of Plus, about KSh 3,666 a month.
So the card costs more per month than a direct card payment would. What you are paying for is that it works — no declined-card loop, no wallet to verify, no favour to ask. If you already have a working foreign card or a funded Figo account, use that instead; this card is for everyone who doesn't.
One thing to know before you buy: OpenAI places a small temporary pre-authorisation on any new card. That is why we sell $30 rather than $20 — the first month clears cleanly with balance left, rather than failing on a card with exactly $20 on it.
Frequently asked questions
Is this a gift card or a bank card?
Neither, exactly. It's a prepaid Reward Card issued by Rewarble for ChatGPT. It behaves like a card at OpenAI's checkout, but it is not a general-purpose Visa — use it for its purpose.
Will Rewarble ask me to verify my identity?
It can. Rewarble issues a prepaid card, and prepaid-card issuers sometimes require a verification step before releasing it. Most customers are not asked. If you are, and you fail it, the card cannot be refunded — the code has been delivered as described. That is why we ask you to read and accept the terms before paying, and why we suggest the $30 card first if you have never used Rewarble.
Can I get a refund?
Only if we fail to deliver your code. Once the code is in your inbox it is a live prepaid card, and neither we nor Rewarble can take it back.
Does this work for ChatGPT Pro at $200 a month?
Yes, but a $60 card will not cover it. Message us on WhatsApp and we can supply a larger card to order.
Does it work for other AI subscriptions — Claude, Cursor, Perplexity?
No. This card is issued for ChatGPT. For other subscriptions you still need a virtual dollar card from a provider that accepts Kenyan customers.
What if I'd rather have ChatGPT Go?
Same card, same steps — choose Go at the subscription screen. A $30 card covers six months of Go.
