iPhone Duo vs Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 — Which Foldable Should You Buy in Kenya?
Two foldables now sit at the top of the Kenyan market, and they could hardly be more different. Apple finally built one — the iPhone Duo, announced on 9 September 2026, the first folding iPhone ever made. Samsung, on its eighth generation, answered with the Galaxy Z Fold 8, revealed at Unpacked in London on 22 July 2026.
They fold to a similar shape and open to a similar size. Almost everything else about them is a different decision. This guide sets the two side by side on the facts, then tells you plainly which one suits which buyer.

At entry level the iPhone Duo costs roughly KSh 140,000 more than the Fold 8. That is not a small premium — it is the price of a very good phone on its own.

The five differences that actually matter
1. The iPhone Duo has no SIM tray at all
This is the single most important line in this article for a Kenyan buyer. The iPhone Duo is eSIM only, in every country. There is no slot.
Safaricom, Airtel and Telkom all support eSIM, so it works — but your line has to be converted first, and moving that line into another handset later is a visit-the-shop job rather than popping out a tray. If you swap phones often, carry two numbers in one device, or travel and buy local SIMs, think carefully. The Fold 8 takes a physical SIM and asks nothing of you.
2. Samsung dropped the telephoto lens
The Fold 8 has two rear cameras: a 50MP wide and a 50MP ultrawide. There is no telephoto lens. Zoom is digital, cropped from the main sensor.
The iPhone Duo carries 2x optical telephoto inside its 48MP main camera. For portraits, for anything at a distance, for a child on a school stage, optical zoom keeps detail that digital zoom throws away. If you photograph people, this is a real gap and it favours Apple.
3. Water resistance is not close
The Duo is rated IP68 to six metres. The Fold 8 is IP48 to 1.5 metres.
Both survive rain. But the "4" in IP48 refers to dust protection, and it is a weaker rating than the "6" in IP68 — which matters more than it sounds for a folding phone in Nairobi dust or upcountry travel. Hinges and grit are old enemies. Apple spent longer on this and it shows in the number.
4. Touch ID, not Face ID
The iPhone Duo unlocks with a fingerprint in the side button. There is no Face ID on this model.
If you are coming from a recent iPhone, this is a genuine change of habit. It is not necessarily worse — a fingerprint is faster with a mask on, and it works on a folded or unfolded screen. But do not assume you are getting Face ID, because you are not.
5. Battery is measured differently, so read it carefully
Apple quotes the Duo at 31 hours of video on the inner screen, 44 hours on the outer, from a dual-battery system with one cell in each half. Samsung quotes a 4,800mAh capacity.
Those are two different kinds of claim, and neither can be converted into the other. What is comparable is charging: the Fold 8 charges at 45W wired and 20W wireless. Apple has not published equivalent charging figures for the Duo.
Which one is better?
An honest answer first: we are not aware of a published survey ranking these two in Kenya, and we will not invent one. Both are too new. What follows is a judgement on the published specifications and on what Kenyan buyers actually ask us for.
Buy the Galaxy Z Fold 8 if
- Price matters at all. It is roughly KSh 140,000 cheaper. That difference buys a laptop.
- You want a physical SIM, or you carry two lines.
- You are already on Android and want to keep your apps, your habits and your Google account.
- You want colour choice — four finishes against Apple's two.
- You want fast charging figures the manufacturer actually publishes.
Buy the iPhone Duo if
- You are already deep in Apple — a Mac, an iPad, a Watch, AirPods, iMessage, iCloud. That ecosystem is the strongest argument for this phone.
- You photograph people and want real optical zoom rather than a digital crop.
- You want the tougher body: IP68 to six metres, titanium, Ceramic Shield 2.
- You shoot video seriously — 4K120 in Dolby Vision is a professional-grade capability.
- You want 2TB, which Samsung does not offer here.
- eSIM-only genuinely does not bother you.
Our plain verdict
For most Kenyan buyers, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 is the more sensible purchase. The screens are effectively the same size, the chip is a current flagship, it takes a normal SIM, and it costs dramatically less. Foldables are still expensive experiments; paying KSh 140,000 extra for one is a hard case to make on features alone.
The iPhone Duo is the better device on paper — better sealing, real optical zoom, stronger video, more storage at the top. If you live inside Apple's ecosystem, nothing Samsung makes will replace it, and the Duo is the only folding iPhone there is. That is worth something, and for some buyers it is worth everything.
What we would not do is buy either purely to own a foldable. Both are first or early generation in their own way, and at these prices the question is not "which foldable" but "do I need one at all".

Is there a bigger Samsung foldable?
Yes. Samsung also launched the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, with an 8.0" inner screen, a 6.5" cover screen and a 200MP main camera with 3x telephoto. If the missing telephoto is your objection to the Fold 8, the Ultra answers it.
Before you decide
Hold both if you can. A foldable is a shape decision more than a specification decision, and no table settles how a phone feels opening in your hand. Come to the showroom on Accra Road and try them.
And whichever you choose, sort the eSIM question first if the Duo is on your list. It is the detail most likely to surprise you after the money is spent.
