A gift card to Amazon.co.uk or Amazon.de is the practical present for someone you love who lives in Europe: the student in Manchester who needs a winter coat, the sister in Berlin setting up a flat, the nephew in Madrid who wants something you'd never guess right. You buy it here in shillings, forward the code, and they spend it on the Amazon they already use. This guide covers the one rule that trips people up — the country lock — and every country we sell. The rule: one country, one card

An Amazon gift card only works on the Amazon site it was issued for. A German card loads a balance on amazon.de and nowhere else; a UK card works on amazon.co.uk only. The balance can't be moved between sites, and an account can't spend a .de balance on .co.uk. So the question is not "where do they live" but "which Amazon do they shop on" — almost always the one for the country they live in, but a Kenyan in Ireland, for instance, often uses amazon.co.uk. Ask if you're not sure.

Prices exclude VAT. The code is emailed to you within a minute of your M-Pesa payment confirming; you forward it. Austria uses amazon.de with euro cards issued for Austria.

What the amounts buy

Amazon's European prices are close to what you'd expect: €5 is a coffee-table book or a phone case, €10–€15 a paperback or a kitchen basic, €25 a decent pair of earphones or a month of groceries' worth of pantry staples, €50 a winter jacket or a small appliance. The UK runs a little dearer per pound. If you don't know what they need, the €25 / £25 card is the size that always gets used.

How they redeem it

Sign in to the matching Amazon site — amazon.co.uk, amazon.de, and so on.
Go to Account → Gift Cards → Redeem a Gift Card (or straight to the site's /redeem page).
Enter the claim code we emailed. The balance is added to the account and applies automatically at checkout.

Amazon's UK and European gift cards are valid for ten years from issue, and the balance can be used across several orders until it's spent.

Sending it well

Forward the code by WhatsApp or email with a line about what it's for. It has no name on it; whoever redeems it owns the balance.
Buy one card per person. A code redeems once, onto one account.
Time it. The code arrives in a minute, so this works at 11pm on a birthday you nearly forgot.

Frequently asked questions

They live in Ireland / Belgium / Portugal — which card?

Whichever Amazon they actually use. Ireland is usually amazon.co.uk (there is an amazon.ie, but most Irish shoppers still use the UK site). Belgium is usually amazon.nl or amazon.de; Portugal amazon.es. Ask them to look at the address bar.

Can they spend a UK card on Amazon Prime or Kindle books?

A gift card balance pays for physical and most digital orders. Prime membership and some digital subscriptions may still ask for a card on file on the UK and EU sites, so don't buy it specifically for Prime.

What about Amazon.com for someone in the US?

Different card — we sell Amazon.com cards too, from $5. Same rule: US card, US site.

Is this refundable?

Only if we fail to deliver the code. Once it's in your inbox it's a live voucher — so check the country before you buy.
