Apple iPhone Duo in Kenya — Confirmed Specs, Price and When It Lands

Apple has done the thing it spent seven years refusing to do. At its "Surprise and shine" event on 9 September 2026, it announced the iPhone Duo — the first foldable iPhone.

Everything below is confirmed by Apple, from its own announcement, not from leaks. Where a number is our estimate rather than Apple's, it says so.

What it actually is

A phone that opens into a small tablet. Folded, you use a 5.4-inch outer screen — Apple says that is about 90 per cent of the screen area of an iPhone 18 Pro, so it is a full phone on its own, not the cramped strip early foldables gave you. Open it and you get a 7.6-inch Super Retina XDR display.

Apple calls it the thinnest iPhone it has ever made when open.

Three things worth stopping on

Touch ID is back

There is no Face ID. The fingerprint reader lives in the side button, as it does on the iPad Air. On a phone that folds, that is the sensible answer — a face scanner would need to work on two screens, or be duplicated.

It also matters more here than Apple's marketing will admit. Face ID has always been the fussier option in bright equatorial sun and behind a mask; a thumb on a button is not.

The battery figures are unusually good

Two batteries, one in each half. Apple quotes 44 hours of video on the outer screen alone and 24 hours using both equally. For context, that outer-screen figure is better than any iPhone Apple sells.

The practical version: if you spend most of the day folded — messages, calls, M-Pesa, WhatsApp — and only open it when you actually want the big screen, this phone lasts. That is a real advantage in a market where you cannot assume a plug.

It is eSIM only, everywhere

No SIM tray at all, in any country. Apple says removing it freed space for battery.

This one deserves a straight warning for Kenyan buyers. Safaricom, Airtel and Telkom all support eSIM, but you must convert your line, and swapping a line into a borrowed handset is no longer a thirty-second job with a pin. If you routinely move your SIM between phones, or you keep a second line in a drawer phone, factor that in before you buy.

Apple has confirmed the 256GB and 2TB prices. The 512GB and 1TB tiers exist but Apple has not published their prices at the time of writing.

Now the honest part about the Kenyan price. That conversion is not what it will cost you here, and anyone showing you a straight dollar conversion is showing you a number that does not exist. A phone landing in Nairobi carries import duty, VAT, freight and a margin. The Kenyan price is always higher than the converted US one.

We are not going to invent it. We publish our price the day we have real stock at a real landed cost, and not a day earlier.

When Kenya gets it

Apple's dates: pre-orders from 16 October, on sale 23 October in more than 70 countries, with a second wave on 30 October.

Kenya is not in Apple's launch group. The countries Apple named include the US, UK, Canada, Australia, Japan, Germany, France, India, China and Brazil. Stock reaches Kenya through distribution afterwards, which in practice has meant two to four weeks behind a global launch.

So the realistic window for the first iPhone Duo units in Nairobi is early to mid-November 2026. First shipments are always small, and small shipments are always the most expensive ones. If you want it at the best price, the patient buyer usually wins by several weeks.

Should you buy it?

A foldable is a first-generation product, and this is Apple's first. Some plain thinking rather than a sales pitch.

Reasons it makes sense

• You genuinely want a tablet you can carry in a pocket, and you would otherwise be buying both a phone and an iPad.
• You work off your phone all day and the outer-screen battery figure changes your life.
• You want the thing nobody else has yet. That is a real reason, and it is fine to say so.

Reasons to wait

• It is a first-generation hinge. Apple's engineering is serious — over 100 components, titanium, IP68 — but no foldable hinge has a long track record, Apple's least of all. Second generations of new Apple categories are usually the ones to buy.
• Repairs. A folding screen is the most expensive part of any foldable, and Kenya has no Apple Store. Ask what a screen costs before you buy, not after.
• The price. At roughly the cost of two iPhone 18 Pros, this is a want, not an upgrade.
• eSIM only. See above. For some people that alone rules it out.

What about the iPhone 18 Pro?

Announced at the same event, and for most people it is the more sensible phone. The 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max keep the same screen sizes as the 17 Pro line and put the work into the internals: the same A20 Pro chip as the Duo, the C2 modem, a smaller Dynamic Island, and a 48MP main camera with real, physical aperture blades — a variable aperture, which is a first on an iPhone and the most interesting camera change Apple has made in years.

Apple has skipped the standard iPhone 18 this year. The line is Pro, Pro Max and Duo.

Can I pre-order the iPhone Duo from iTey Store?

How much will the iPhone Duo cost in Kenya?

We do not know. USD 1,999 converts to roughly KSh 258,800, but duty, VAT, freight and margin all land on top of that, so the shelf price here will be higher. We will publish it when we have stock, not before.

When will it be in Nairobi?

Apple ships on 23 October to more than 70 countries, not including Kenya. Stock normally reaches us two to four weeks later, so early to mid-November is the realistic expectation.

Does it have Face ID?

No. Touch ID, in the side button.

Does it take a physical SIM?

No. It is eSIM only in every country. Your Safaricom, Airtel or Telkom line will need to be converted to eSIM.

Is it waterproof?

It is IP68 rated — 6 metres for 30 minutes, per Apple. That is water resistance, not a licence to swim with it, and no foldable should be treated casually around water.

Duo or iPhone 18 Pro?

The 18 Pro for almost everyone. Buy the Duo if you specifically want the folding screen and accept first-generation risk on a hinge, at close to double the price.

What colours can I get?

Two: Star White and Night Sky. That is the whole range at launch.

Where we stand

The iPhone Duo is the most interesting thing Apple has released in years, and it is also a first-generation folding phone at roughly twice the price of an excellent one that does not fold. Both of those are true at once.
