What we've learned selling Xbox games in Kenya
Xbox games in Kenya have an unusual buying pattern because of Game Pass — the right decision is often NOT buying the game at all. These are the conversations we have with every Xbox game buyer.
Check Game Pass first — the single most important habit
Game Pass Ultimate (~KSh 2,000–2,500/month) includes 100+ Xbox games on day one. Before buying any Xbox game, check whether it's in Game Pass at xbox.com/games. If it is, the cheaper path is one month of Game Pass than a full game purchase. We tell every Xbox buyer to make this their default check before reaching for their card.
Smart Delivery — buy once, play on every Xbox you own
Xbox's Smart Delivery means one purchase covers Series X, Series S, Xbox One, and (for select titles) PC. Most newer titles support this. Compare to PlayStation, where you sometimes pay separately for PS4 and PS5 versions. Smart Delivery is an under-marketed Xbox advantage that genuinely matters in multi-device households.
Xbox Play Anywhere — some Xbox purchases include PC free
A subset of Xbox games (Halo Infinite, Forza Horizon 5, Sea of Thieves, Microsoft first-party) include the PC version free with the Xbox version. If you have a gaming PC alongside your Xbox, this doubles the value. Check the Play Anywhere list at xbox.com/play-anywhere before buying — sometimes you can substitute a more expensive separate PC copy.
Microsoft adds first-party titles to Game Pass — sometimes within 90 days
Microsoft regularly adds its own published games to Game Pass shortly after launch. Indiana Jones, Starfield, Forza Motorsport all hit GP day-one. If a game is published by Microsoft / Bethesda / Activision, the smart play is often: wait 30–60 days, see whether it lands in Game Pass, then subscribe for one month if it does. Saves the full purchase price.
Physical Xbox games — smaller resale market than PlayStation
Xbox physical games trade in Nairobi at KSh 1,500–4,000 for current-gen titles. The Kenya used market is smaller than PlayStation's but exists. iTey occasionally has trade-in opportunities for current-gen Xbox titles in good condition — bring your library for assessment if you're upgrading consoles or want to recover some value.
Who should not buy an Xbox game (yet)
Skip the Xbox purchase if (a) you already subscribe to Game Pass and the game is in the library — just play it via subscription, (b) you have a powerful gaming PC and the game has a PC release — PC versions often have better mod support, higher frame rates, and longer post-launch life, or (c) you're hype-buying day-one — wait two weeks and see whether the game lands in Game Pass shortly after launch.
