Samsung powerbanks
From our Nairobi showroom
What we've learned selling power banks in Kenya
Power banks are the most over-bought accessory in Kenya — buyers grab the biggest one they see and end up carrying a brick. The right capacity, charging speed, and certification matter much more than the headline mAh number.
Capacity — what you actually need vs what marketing pushes
A modern smartphone has a ~5000mAh battery. A 10,000mAh power bank gives roughly 1.5 full phone charges (real-world, accounting for conversion losses). A 20,000mAh gives 3 charges. For day-trips, 10,000mAh is enough; for travel or laptop charging, 20,000mAh+. Beyond 30,000mAh, you are carrying a brick most days for use cases that rarely occur.
Charging speed (PD, PPS, QC) — the spec that has overtaken capacity
USB-C Power Delivery (PD) 30W+ is now the bar for phones; PD 65–100W charges laptops. If you have a fast-charging phone or want to charge a laptop, the wattage matters more than the capacity. A 10,000mAh PD-65W bank is more useful than a 20,000mAh 5W bank for almost everyone.
Airline limits — what flies and what does not
Airlines restrict power banks above 100Wh (roughly 27,000mAh at 3.7V) from checked bags and many ban them from carry-on. If you fly internationally from Nairobi often, stay at 20,000mAh or below to avoid airport surprises. The bigger banks are travel by road, not air.
Counterfeit power banks are dangerous — not just dishonest
Counterfeit Anker, RAVPower, and Xiaomi power banks circulate widely in Nairobi at suspicious prices. The capacity is often a third of the advertised number, but worse, the battery cells are uncertified — there have been fire incidents. iTey stocks only legit units with proper certification stickers. The price gap pays for not having your power bank set fire to your bag.
Who should not buy a large power bank (and what to consider instead)
Skip the large power bank if (a) you mostly work from home and rarely need power away from a wall — a small wall charger is fine, (b) you actually need to power a laptop for many hours away from power — a portable power station (1000Wh+) is the right tool, not a power bank, or (c) you want it for emergencies during Kenya power cuts — a small UPS for your specific device is cheaper and longer-lasting.
