Soundbars are the most-rushed audio purchase we sell — buyers replace their flat TV speakers and assume any soundbar will be fine. The room shape, speaker count, and subwoofer presence make a much bigger difference than the brand badge.

Subwoofer — wired vs wireless, and whether you need one
Most modern soundbars ship with a wireless subwoofer — place it anywhere in the room. For movies and music with bass content, the subwoofer is the bigger difference vs TV speakers. If the soundbar you are considering has no sub, expect dialogue clarity to be good but bass to be lacking.
Room shape matters — long narrow rooms vs square rooms
Soundbar performance is room-dependent. A long, narrow room sends sound straight at the listening position — soundbars sound great. A square room with the TV on one wall and the couch in the centre is harder — sound disperses and the sweet spot is small. If your room is shaped badly for a soundbar, a 5.1 system with discrete rear speakers will work much better.
HDMI ARC / eARC is the connection that matters
