AirPods Max vs AirPods Pro — when over-ear is genuinely worth it
AirPods Pro give you 80% of the audio experience for 30% of the price. AirPods Max earn their premium specifically if you (a) listen to music as a primary activity rather than background, (b) work from home where over-ear comfort beats in-ear for 4+ hour sessions, or (c) value the build quality and the metal-and-mesh design. If you mostly use earbuds for podcasts on commutes, Pro is the smarter buy.
AirPods Max vs Sony WH-1000XM5 / Bose QC Ultra — the honest comparison
Sony XM5 and Bose QC Ultra are roughly half the AirPods Max price and arguably have stronger active noise cancellation and a slightly warmer sound signature. AirPods Max wins on build quality, materials, and the Apple-ecosystem features (instant pairing, automatic switching between iPhone / iPad / Mac, spatial audio). If you are deep in Apple's ecosystem, AirPods Max is justified. If you are not, Sony or Bose gives you better headphone for less money.
USB-C AirPods Max (current gen) vs the original Lightning — what actually changed
The current USB-C AirPods Max is the same H1 chip, same drivers, same physical headphones — Apple updated the port and refreshed the colours. If you find a near-mint original Lightning AirPods Max secondhand in Kenya, the audio is identical; you only lose USB-C charging and the new colour options. Don't pay full new-gen prices for an incremental update if you find a clean used pair.
The case — yes, the case is real, and yes, you should use one
The included "Smart Case" attracted a lot of criticism online but it serves one purpose: putting AirPods Max into low-power mode when you're done. Battery replacement reality — they are not throwaway
Unlike AirPods Pro (where the battery is effectively non-replaceable), AirPods Max have a more conventional internal battery that Apple's service network can replace at end-of-life. With Kenya's limited official AppleCare service, the realistic replacement path involves iTey shipping to a regional service centre — possible but not cheap. Treat them as a 4–5 year purchase, not a 10-year one.
Who should not buy AirPods Max (yet)
Skip AirPods Max if (a) you commute mostly on a matatu / boda and want something pocketable — AirPods Pro is the better tool, (b) you are an Android user — they pair fine but you lose every Apple-ecosystem feature that justifies the premium, or (c) you want flagship audio purely for music listening and the Apple aesthetic does not matter to you — Sony XM5 or Sennheiser Momentum 4 give better sound per shilling.
