The five differences that matter
1. The iPhone Duo has no SIM tray
This is the most important line on the page for a Kenyan buyer. The Duo is eSIM only, in every country. Safaricom, Airtel and Telkom all support eSIM, so it works — but your line has to be converted first, and moving it into another handset later is a shop visit rather than popping out a tray. If you swap phones often or carry two numbers, think carefully. The Fold 8 asks nothing of you.
2. Samsung dropped the telephoto lens
The Fold 8 has a 50MP wide and a 50MP ultrawide. There is no telephoto. Zoom is digital, cropped from the main sensor. The Duo carries 2× optical telephoto inside its 48MP main camera. For portraits, or a child on a school stage, optical zoom keeps detail that digital zoom throws away.
3. Water and dust resistance is not close
The Duo is IP68 to six metres. The Fold 8 is IP48 to 1.5 metres. Both survive rain, but the 4 in IP48 is the dust rating, and it is the weaker one — which matters more than it sounds for a folding phone in Nairobi dust or on upcountry roads.
4. Touch ID, not Face ID
The Duo unlocks with a fingerprint in the side button. There is no Face ID on this model. Coming from a recent iPhone that is a real change of habit — not necessarily worse, but do not assume you are getting Face ID, because you are not.
5. The price gap is a whole phone
The screens are effectively the same size and both chips are current flagships. What separates them most is money — about KSh 150,999 of it.

Buy the Galaxy Z Fold 8 if
- Price matters at all
- You want a physical SIM, or carry two lines
- You are already on Android
- You want colour choice — four against two
- You want charging figures the maker actually publishes
Buy the iPhone Duo if
- You already live in Apple — Mac, iPad, Watch, iMessage
- You photograph people and want real optical zoom
- You want the tougher body: IP68 to six metres
- You shoot serious video — 4K120 in Dolby Vision
- You want 2TB, which Samsung does not offer here
For most Kenyan buyers, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 is the more sensible purchase. Same inner screen size, a current flagship chip, a normal SIM, and dramatically less money.
The iPhone Duo is the better device on paper — better sealing, real optical zoom, stronger video, more storage at the top. If you live inside Apple's ecosystem, nothing Samsung makes replaces it, and this is the only folding iPhone there is.
What we would not do is buy either purely to own a foldable. At these prices the question is not which foldable, but whether you need one at all.

For most Kenyan buyers the Galaxy Z Fold 8 is the sensible purchase: the inner screen is the same 7.6 inches, the chip is a current flagship, it takes a physical SIM, and it costs far less. Choose the iPhone Duo if you are already inside Apple's ecosystem, you want real optical zoom, or you need the tougher IP68 body — and if being eSIM-only does not bother you.
Does the iPhone Duo take a physical SIM in Kenya?
No. The iPhone Duo is eSIM only in every country and has no SIM tray at all. Safaricom, Airtel and Telkom all support eSIM, but your line has to be converted first, and moving it to another handset later is a shop visit rather than swapping a tray. The Galaxy Z Fold 8 takes a normal physical SIM.
Which foldable has the better camera?
On paper the iPhone Duo, chiefly because it has 2× optical telephoto and the Galaxy Z Fold 8 has no telephoto lens at all — its zoom is digital, cropped from the main sensor. Samsung's sensors are slightly higher at 50MP against 48MP, but a missing lens matters more than two megapixels.
Which one survives Kenyan conditions better?
The iPhone Duo. It is rated IP68 to six metres for thirty minutes, in a Grade 5 titanium body with Ceramic Shield 2. The Galaxy Z Fold 8 is IP48 to 1.5 metres. The 4 in IP48 is the dust rating, and dust is the old enemy of a folding hinge.
Is there a bigger Samsung foldable?
Yes — the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, with an 8.0-inch inner screen, a 6.5-inch cover screen and a 200MP main camera with 3× telephoto. If the missing telephoto is your objection to the Fold 8, the Ultra answers it.
