    What we've learned selling portable power stations in Kenya

    Power stations have become a staple Kenya purchase because of grid unreliability — but the right size for your real load is rarely what buyers ask for first. These are the conversations we walk every buyer through.

    Sizing — what your real load is, not what the spec sheet looks like

    Buyers come in asking for the biggest power station they can afford. The right question is: what do you actually need to power, and for how long. A 1000Wh unit (EcoFlow Delta 2 or similar) keeps a laptop, lights, router, and a fan running through a typical Kenya power cut. A 2000Wh+ unit makes sense only if you need to run a fridge or appliances. We size to your real load, not your fear of the load.

    Inverter wattage matters as much as battery capacity

    Capacity (Wh) is how long it runs; inverter wattage (W) is what it can run at any moment. A small 600W inverter cannot power a kettle or microwave regardless of how big the battery is. If you plan to power kitchen appliances, look at the inverter rating — most Kenyan use cases need 1500W+ continuous.

    Solar input — useful in Kenya but with caveats

    EcoFlow, Anker, and Jackery all support solar panels — Kenya's solar is strong, so this is a real option. The caveats: solar panels are bulky, the maximum charge wattage is limited (typically 200–400W input on the station), and full recharge from solar can take a full day. As a primary recharge method it works; as an emergency back-up after a long cut, plan to AC-charge before the next storm.

    Battery chemistry — LiFePO4 vs older lithium

    Modern power stations use LiFePO4 batteries — these last 3000+ cycles and degrade gracefully. Older lithium-ion power stations (2022 and earlier) used NMC chemistry rated for 500–800 cycles. If you are buying second-hand or budget, check the chemistry — the lifetime gap is dramatic and not always reflected in the price.

    Who should not buy a power station (yet)

    Skip the power station if (a) you experience rare and short power cuts — a smaller UPS for your specific devices is cheaper and adequate, (b) you actually need solar-plus-inverter for the whole house — that is a different product class (full inverter + battery system), not a portable power station, or (c) you are buying for one specific overnight use and will rarely use it again — rental is a smarter Kenya move for one-off events.
