What we've learned selling action cameras in Kenya
Action camera buyers in Kenya are usually one of three: content creators, travellers, and people who recently took up a sport. The right camera for each is different. These are the patterns we walk through.
GoPro, Insta360, or DJI Action — the honest cut
GoPro is the genre standard — best ecosystem, widest accessory range, strongest in pure action use (mounted on a helmet, board, or chest). Insta360 (X4, Ace Pro) is the creator's pick — 360° capture means you frame the shot in post, not on set. DJI Action wins on price-per-spec for buyers who do not need the GoPro accessory ecosystem.
Stabilisation is the spec to care about — every brand calls theirs the best
All three flagship brands have excellent in-body stabilisation now. The real test is low-light and high-speed motion (running, mountain biking). GoPro HyperSmooth and Insta360 FlowState are both genuinely class-leading. Below the flagship tier, stabilisation drops off fast — budget action cams produce shaky footage that needs heavy software smoothing.
Battery and SD cards — the silent cost
Action cameras eat batteries fast — 60–90 minutes per battery in active filming. Plan for at least 2 spare batteries and a 128GB+ V30-rated microSD card. The wrong SD card causes dropped frames and corrupted files — buy the brand-recommended card, not the cheapest one.
Mounts and accessories — start with the basics, skip the rest
Most buyers over-buy accessories on day one. We tell every action camera buyer to start with: a chest mount, a head strap, a floaty for water work, and a tripod. Add everything else only when a specific shoot demands it. The accessory aisle is a graveyard of unused gimbals and selfie sticks.
Who should not buy an action camera (and what to consider)
Skip the action camera if (a) you mostly want it for stills — any modern smartphone takes better photos, (b) you want it for a one-week holiday and will not use it after — rental is the smarter Kenya move, or (c) you want it primarily for vlogging while talking to camera — a phone with a wide selfie lens is the better tool. Match the camera to the actual shooting day.
